First of Its Kind:
New Company Launched with Revolutionary Approach in the Bicycle Industry
MADISON, Wisconsin, April 18, 2007 – Cyclists commute to save gas, money, the planet. Cyclists ride for their health, for the love of the great outdoors. Cyclists get it. But the industry in general hasn’t gone far enough to demonstrate that they get it, too. Until now.
Kind Bicycles, the brainchild of Wayne Thompson, former VP of eBusiness at Pacific Cycle, will offer a ride that takes cycling full circle. A lifetime cyclist, Thompson ran the logistics and distribution network at Pacific from 1998 until taking on his latest role in 2006.
Recognizing that many industry practices are out of alignment with their most loyal customers’ lifestyles and views, Thompson will provide avid cyclists an alternative: bikes manufactured, distributed and sold in ways that clearly focus on conserving resources, improving working conditions for overseas workers and protecting the environment.
In an industry-revolutionizing approach, says Thompson, “Kind will engage with only the most innovative suppliers and vendors, those who use sustainable business practices.” Kind Bicycles, in other words, will be just that. By prioritizing the “3 P’s” – people, the planet, then profits – Kind will complete the cycle of sustainability by giving back a portion of its profits to both the manufacturing and sales localities in support of social and environmental causes.
“Madison is an ideal birthplace for Kind,” states Thompson, “a strong cycling community with an increasingly green tint.” It is already home to four leading cycling companies and some of the nations top bicycle retailers. It boasts an engaged local government and activists who support one of the nation’s best bicycling path systems, has a large commute by bike population, hosts frequent races, charity and leisure rides.
With bikes geared toward the urban pavement market, Kind will introduce is 2008 bikes at the fall trade shows. The line will consist of commuting/city bikes and cruisers along with limited mountain bike models in both 26 and 29 inch wheel sizes. Simple designs and convertibility for use in multiple environments will be the cornerstone of its product line. Road racing and cyclocross lines are also planned for the 2008 model year.
